Hints for how to turn your Surname Project into a success

With the proper work, you can make your surname project into a huge success. The list below provides helpful hints and suggestions on how to make your project successful. We hope that the information provided below will help you to succeed in your project. If you have tips that you would like to share with other Project Administrators, Moderators and Members, please feel free to submit your suggestions below for posting in this list.

  1. A successful project starts with a great Genebase surname project homepage. Your Genebase Project Homepage is your place to make your project shine. Always make the aim of your project clear and exciting.

The aim of your project is posted in the "objectives" section of your Genebase project homepage. A well-written objective will make the goal of your project clear to potential members and will allow them to share in your excitement for the project.
  2. Keep your content fresh! All Genebase Project Pages have an announcement section for project administrators to keep members up to date. Members want to feel involved in their projects, and by keeping the content and announcements up to date, your project will be more exciting for new and potential members. You can update your announcements quickly and easily at your Surname Project Control Panel.
  3. Encourage participation in your project's forum. All surname projects are automatically provided with their own forum so that administrators, users and visitors can communicate, brainstorm, and keep each other up to date with important topics pertaining to their research. Take advantage of this important and helpful feature of Genebase.
  4. Recruit members. A great homepage will make a big difference in attracting members to join, but successful recruiting is also important. Project Administrators and members usually use a wide variety of techniques to let the world know about their project in order to recruit members who share their surname. Having a clear aim is very helpful, and you should let people know the aims of your project when you communicate with them to ask them to join.
  5. Write a good letter. It is recommended that when you initially contact a potential member to make sure that your letter is clear and that your objectives are well defined. It is very helpful to provide a link to your project homepage so that the reader knows where to go for more information. It may also be helpful to provide to a link to Genebase's FAQ and Surname Project pages so that readers who are not familiar with surname projects will be able to understand what they are.
  6. Find potential members. Potential members with surnames of interest to you can be found at genealogy forums, through telephone directories, search engines, and many other places. The more people who know about your project, the more likely that you will be able to recruit relevant members worldwide and the faster that you will be able to grow your project and research your surname.
